SEO with an AI agent: make targeted improvements to your website

An AI SEO agent is software that pulls your search data and works out what to change on each page. It can also make those changes in your CMS. Hermes does this with data from Google Search Console. Below, you will see how the data comes in, how it turns into page changes, and which work stays with people.

In many teams, nobody has time to check every page's keywords, impressions, and click-through rates each month. By hand, that work is slow and repetitive. SEO with an AI agent splits the work. The agent does the data work and can repeat it every month, while you decide what goes live. The goal is pages that fit what people search for; better rankings are not guaranteed.

An AI agent retrieves search data and turns it into targeted page improvements.

How does an AI agent get your Search Console data?

Hermes pulls query data for each page through the Search Console API, with a read-only service account.

Google Search Console records which searches show your pages, their average position, how many impressions they get, and how many people click. Google documents these fields in the Search Analytics method of the Search Console API. Our article on retrieving marketing data with an AI agent explains how to connect Hermes to Search Console.

For this workflow, Hermes runs a Python script that queries the API. For each landing page, the script retrieves the top keywords with their impressions, clicks, average position, and click-through rate (CTR). The data goes into a structured overview that Hermes then analyzes. You no longer export files by hand or spend hours in a dashboard; you get evidence sorted by page. Search Console access is read-only; CMS permissions are separate.

How does the agent turn data into page changes?

It looks for three patterns in the data and proposes a specific change for each one. Once the Search Console data arrives, Hermes checks for:

  • Keywords with many impressions but a low CTR: the page shows up in Google, but few people click.

  • Keywords where the page ranks low and a clearer title may help.

  • Queries the page attracts but does not answer well yet.

For each pattern, Hermes proposes a change: a better title, an extra paragraph, an internal link, or a new FAQ that answers a specific search question. These are hypotheses to test, not proof that a title change will improve a ranking. Whether AI search engines such as ChatGPT can also name the page as a source is a separate check. Read how to make your pages citable for AI search engines.

Sometimes there is no Search Console data yet. In late October 2026, Google did not yet know this English article. The agent then searched for "SEO with an AI agent" itself and looked at what Google shows. The term "AI SEO agent" stood out, and it did not appear anywhere on the page. It proposed opening the article with a definition that uses that term. That sentence is now the first line. Whether it helps rankings has not been measured yet.

What are SEO skills, and how do they work?

Skills are reusable, step-by-step procedures that Hermes loads for one part of the SEO work.

One skill retrieves and analyzes Search Console data for a specific page. Another turns that analysis into a content package, such as a better meta title, a rewritten introduction, more FAQs, or internal links to related pages. A third handles keyword research. Which keywords belong together, what intent do they express, and which page should serve each group?

You can reuse a skill. A procedure for a service landing page can also guide work on a blog article or product page. You adjust it to the page's purpose. You do not have to explain the approach each time. Hermes loads the right skill for the task and follows its steps.

Here is what a report looks like in practice. The output below is the original Dutch page audit the agent ran on our own homepage, reproduced verbatim, including the scores, priorities, and E-E-A-T assessment. It is a historical report from August 21, 2026, not a new audit or a statement of the site's current condition. Its suggestions and potential score changes are the agent's assessment, not measured improvements.

In plain English: the agent scored the homepage 7.1 out of 10. Its top three fixes: give the homepage its own search intent, add real proof from practice, and answer buyers' selection questions more fully. It also flagged a grammar mistake in the Dutch copy.

Top Priority Fixes

#1 — Geef de homepage een eigen zoekintentie

🔴 Critical Score impact: Search Intent Alignment potentieel +0,8; On-Page SEO +0,5

Current:

  • Title: Voltti | Beheerde AI-oplossing voor bedrijven — 45 tekens
  • H1: Beheerde AI.

#2 — Voeg echt praktijkbewijs toe

🟡 High Score impact: E-E-A-T potentieel +1,0; Content Quality & Depth +0,8

Current:

  1. de oorspronkelijke handmatige taak;
  2. welke bronnen en rechten Hermes kreeg;
  3. wat de agent uitvoerde;
  4. waar menselijke goedkeuring verplicht bleef;
  5. hoe output en herstel werden gecontroleerd;
  6. een echte screenshot, workflowweergave of readback;

🟡 High Score impact: Content Quality & Depth potentieel +1,0; Search Intent +0,5

Current:

De homepage heeft circa 417 direct zichtbare woorden. De FAQ-antwoorden zitten ingeklapt. Relevante concurrenten bevatten ongeveer:

  • Ploko Hermes-pagina: 950 woorden;
  • JK Agents Hermes-uitleg: 1.095 woorden;

  • voor welke organisaties het wel of niet past;
  • wat een pilot concreet oplevert;
  • wat Voltti precies beheert;
  • welke interne eigenaar nodig is;
  • welke risico’s en beperkingen blijven bestaan;
  • hoe succes na de pilot wordt beoordeeld.

Fix:

Voeg compacte secties toe:

  • Wanneer Hermes past

🟢 Medium Score impact: Technical SEO potentieel +0,4; On-Page SEO +0,2

Current:

Er zijn twee geldige JSON-LD-blokken:

  • Organization
  • BreadcrumbList

Fix:

Voeg toe:

  • Service met Voltti als provider;
  • areaServed voor België en Nederland, alleen als dit overeenkomt met de bedrijfsvoering;
  • serviceType in gewone, feitelijke taal;

🟢 Medium Score impact: On-Page SEO potentieel +0,4; Content Structure & UX +0,3

Current:

  • Meerdere mobiele links meten slechts circa 24–42 px hoog.

Fix:

Why repeat the process every month?

Because rankings and search behavior change, and a monthly cycle gives Google time to crawl your edits.

A page that ranks well today can drop in three months. That happens when competitors improve or people search differently. Repeating the process monthly gives you a record over time. Hermes compares the new data with the previous month and suggests adjustments. Those comparisons show changes, but they cannot prove on their own which edit caused them.

A monthly cycle also gives the team a review schedule it can keep up with. Some issues need attention sooner; others take longer to assess. A focused package of changes each month keeps the site moving without overwhelming your team. Agree which changes need approval before publication and which you check afterward.

Which SEO work should stay with people?

The agent handles the data work. People keep four jobs: choosing the strategy, checking claims and brand tone, approving changes, and judging the results.

Strategy means deciding which pages matter and which search intent each page should serve. You check claims and brand tone because the agent can propose a sentence that is not true for your business. You approve new paragraphs and rewritten introductions before they go live, if that is the rule you agreed on. When you judge the results, remember this: a comparison with last month shows what changed. It does not show which edit caused it.

Automated checks can be wrong, too. In one of our own audits, a spelling check flagged the correct US word "analyses" as a British spelling. Someone has to read the findings and decide which ones hold up. The agent's proposals are hypotheses to test, not orders to follow blindly.

Can the agent publish directly in your CMS?

Yes, if your CMS can be connected through an MCP server, and only within the permissions you agree on. The proposed changes then do not have to sit in a document that someone copies into the site by hand.

Hermes connects to your CMS through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). It is a standard for connecting an AI agent to external systems. Our own site runs on Storyblok. Through the Storyblok MCP server, Hermes can create drafts, update content, and prepare changes for approval. In our own workflow, it also sometimes publishes directly. We review the result afterward and make corrections where needed. Before connecting a CMS, review which CRM, CMS, and project integrations make sense.

This approach is not limited to Storyblok. WordPress, Directus, Strapi, and Contentful have APIs that may be connected through a suitable MCP server or integration. We check compatibility and permissions for each setup. At first, you can work through the process with the agent, reviewing each proposed change and publishing it yourself. As tested workflows earn your trust, you can hand over more. Some tasks, such as meta titles and internal links, can run directly under agreed rules. Other changes, such as new paragraphs or rewritten introductions, can stay in draft until you approve them. You decide how much autonomy to grant, and you review the work the agent does.

How do you set up an SEO pilot?

Start with a few landing pages and one Search Console connection, and review the first rounds yourself. A pilot usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, from the first conversation to the evaluation.

A monthly SEO cycle can make a useful pilot. In the first rounds, you read the analyses, review the changes, and publish by hand if that is the agreed boundary. Hand over more only when the process is reliable. Meanwhile, the team learns which tasks it can hand over and which still need a closer look.

Search data moves more slowly, so review positions and clicks again after two to three months, alongside the work completed. That is an evaluation point, not a promise of growth. Not sure SEO is the right first process? Read more about starting with one frustrating workflow.

Frequently asked questions

01Do you need technical knowledge to use this?

No. Your team reviews the proposed changes in the CMS without running the technical setup. Hermes analyzes the data and prepares the edits. Someone still has to configure the integrations behind the scenes; in a Voltti pilot, we do that.

02Does this work with every CMS?

An API can make a CMS integration possible, but it is not a guarantee. Our own site runs on Storyblok. For WordPress, Directus, and other systems, we check the available integration, permissions, and limitations before connecting them.

03How soon will I see results?

Google needs time to crawl and reassess changes, and the timing varies. After two to three months, review the first data alongside the work completed. Rankings and clicks may improve, stay level, or fall; a monthly cycle is a way to evaluate and adjust, not a guarantee of growth.

04Is this the same as an SEO tool such as Semrush or Ahrefs?

Not exactly. SEO tools provide data and recommendations and may also offer automation. In this workflow, Hermes works as an AI SEO agent. It retrieves the data, turns it into specific page edits, puts them into your CMS, and repeats the work monthly. The distinction is the configured workflow and permissions: the agent can carry out work as well as analyze it.

05Does Google penalize text written by an AI agent?

Not because AI wrote it. According to Google's guidance on AI-generated content, quality counts, not how content is produced. Mass-producing pages without value for users is spam, though ("scaled content abuse"). Here, the agent proposes changes, and you agree on what a person approves before publication. The EU AI Act asks for an AI label on text about matters of public interest. That does not apply when a person edits and checks the text and someone is responsible for publishing it.
